Meet the Team: Ling Liao

Ling Liao joins as Senior Tax Associate

We’re very pleased to introduce Ling Liao, who has joined PKF Channel Islands as a Senior Tax Associate. With solid experience in both Jersey and UK tax, Ling brings a fresh perspective, a passion for problem-solving, and a genuine enthusiasm for building client relationships.

Welcome! First things first – can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I grew up in Glasgow and graduated from Strathclyde University in 2022 with a degree in Accounting and Finance. I’m currently studying towards my ACCA qualification, which has been a great way to deepen my technical knowledge and stay challenged. Outside of work, I love going on long walks – Jersey is perfect for that, with so many beautiful places to explore. I also go to dance classes and play netball, which has been a brilliant way to stay active and meet new people. It’s really helped me feel connected to the community here.

What did you do before joining PKF Channel Islands?
I previously spent two and a half years at another accounting firm where I learned about the wonderful, complex world of tax. My work involved preparing, filing and corresponding with clients about their personal or company tax returns for both Jersey and the UK, as well as liaising with Revenue Jersey and HMRC on queries. In addition to client work, I was trusted to perform peer reviews of colleagues’ submissions, providing constructive feedback, checking for accuracy, and ensuring everything met internal standards. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop both my technical skills and my attention to detail, while also contributing to the team’s overall quality and consistency.

Prior to that, I worked as a brand ambassador for several international brands. It was a dynamic role that taught me a lot about communication, professionalism, and adapting to different environments. I really enjoyed engaging with people and building brand trust, skills that I’ve found surprisingly valuable even in the world of tax.

What made you choose a career in tax and finance?
I studied accountancy at school and absolutely loved it; helped by a brilliant teacher who made the subject engaging and accessible. That early experience stuck with me, and I’ve always known I wanted to be an accountant. At university, tax really clicked for me. It isn’t just about numbers (though I definitely am a numbers person). It involves interpretation, problem-solving, and staying on top of evolving legislation. Every client’s situation is different, and I enjoy the challenge of finding tailored solutions. It’s a field that keeps you sharp and offers real opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

What attracted you to PKF Channel Islands?
Working in the Jersey tax industry, you hear a lot about other accounting practices. After doing further research into PKF CI, I really admired their drive towards a personalised client experience. It’s clear they don’t just focus on technical accuracy; they genuinely care about building long-term relationships and tailoring advice to each client’s unique needs. I also appreciated how approachable and collaborative the firm seemed, both in its culture and its communication style. That balance of professionalism and warmth resonated with me, and I knew it was the kind of environment where I could grow, contribute meaningfully, and feel part of something bigger.

What are your immediate priorities – what are you looking forward to working on?
We’ve just wrapped up the Jersey personal tax return deadline, which was busy but rewarding. My focus is now shifting to the UK personal tax deadline. I’m especially looking forward to continuing to build my expertise in UK tax, taking on more complex cases and deepening my understanding of corporate structures and compliance.

What does your role involve here at PKF Channel Islands?
I currently work as a Senior Tax Associate in the tax department, using the technical knowledge I’ve gained from my previous experience to communicate with clients about their tax queries and prepare and submit their returns for both Jersey and the UK. As tax laws for Jersey and the UK are constantly evolving, there’s always something new to learn. The work continuously challenges me and has broadened my understanding of complex matters, allowing me to think creatively about solutions.

First impressions count – how have your first few weeks been?
My first few weeks were amazing. The team was incredibly welcoming and supportive, which made the transition smooth and helped me get to grips with new systems quickly. One thing I’ve particularly appreciated is sitting near the Tax Partner and directors, who are all specialists in their fields. Just being in that environment has been a learning experience, I often overhear discussions about legislative changes or different approaches to complex issues, and it’s given me valuable insights beyond my day-to-day work.

What are you most looking forward to in the months ahead?
I’m really looking forward to completing my final ACCA exams soon. As a reward, I’ve planned a long holiday to recharge and celebrate. After that, I’ll be jumping straight into studying for my tax qualification. Broadening my knowledge of UK and international tax and deepening my expertise will allow me to continue delivering high-quality advice and support to clients.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
I’m an absolute foodie and always keen to try new places and menus. When I heard about some new restaurants opening recently, I immediately made plans with friends to check them out. I love discovering hidden gems and sharing good food, it’s one of my favourite ways to unwind and connect with people.

And finally, what’s your go-to drink order when it’s your turn for the tea round?
I usually go for a classic builder’s Yorkshire Tea with a splash of lactose-free milk.
